EAST INDONESIAN PARADISE GEARS UP FOR SAIL MOROTAI 2012 By Fardah

Jakarta, Jan 29, 2012 (ANTARA) - Known as East Indonesia Paradise for its beautiful maritime scenery and unique marine biota, Morotai Island in North Maluku Province is gearing up Sail Indonesia Morotai (SIM) 2012.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on January 24, 2012, issued a presidential decree on the implementation of SIM which will be held in the Morotai Island district on September 8, 2012.

Based on the Presidential Decree no. 4/2012, Coordinating Minister for People`s Welfare Agung Laksono has been named as the chairman of the advisory committee, while Maritime and Fishery Affairs Minister Sharif Cicip Sutardjo as the chairman of the organizing committee.

"The decree gives certainty to the people and other related parties in North Maluku about the implementation of Sail Morotai," Abubakar Abdullah, a spokesman of the North Maluku provincial administration said in Ternate, recently.

To follow up the issuance of the presidential decree, Minister Agung Laksono visited Morotai Island, on Saturday (Jan 28) to inspect the ongoing preparations for the international maritime event.

He called for the of preparation acceleration particularly concerning the construction of facilities and infrastructures, such as a power plant, roads, harbors, an airport, hospitals, hotels, and schools.

"This event will mark the revival of Morotai`s tourism potential, in particular because Morotai is now a district administration having population of 70,000 people," said Agung who was accompanied by Minister Sharif during the visit.

The fishery and tourism industries in Morotai were potential, he said. The government would invite investors to develop Morotai`s natural resources, the minister added.

Agung planned to hold a coordinating meeting on Sail Morotai with related ministers and would report the results to the head of state.

North Maluku Governor Thaib Armaiyn had earlier instructed the Regional Working Device Unit (SKPD) in North Maluku to complete the infrastructure improvement works needed for the implementation of SIM.

"The North Maluku administration in its Regional Budget 2012 allocates funds amounting to Rp56 billion to build various infrastructures needed for the implementation of Sail Morotai," Thaib said recently.

The funds for the infrastructure development will come from the State Budget (APBN) and the Regional Budget (APBD).

The governor was optimistic that the event would be able to attract more tourists and investors to visit the province.

SIM is aimed at boosting the people`s economic development and supporting the development acceleration in one of the outermost isle in North Sulawesi.

It will consist of present various activities such as a traditional boat parade, a beach clean up campaign, a maritime seminar, a maritime sport competition, an international research boat expedition, an outermost isle scientific expedition, World War II display.

Morotai Isle is an icon of World War II in 1945 when Japan and the Ally forces had used Morotai Island as military bases in the Asian and Pacific region.

Until now, the isle still has many remnants of the Allies` tanks and warships dated back to World War II.

"Japanese bunkers, ex-air force base, and tank as well as warship wrecks can still be found in Morotai and North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province," Muhadjir Albar, the secretary of the North Maluku provincial administration, said last year.

Therefore, the North Maluku administration has invited Japan to participate in Sail Morotai, despite the major disaster that hit the East Asian nation last year.

"We understand that the massive earthquake and tsunami hitting Japan had caused a lot of problems, but the North Maluku province still hopes that the country could take part in Sail Morotai," he said.

Japan would be a special participant in the international maritime event, because of its historical links with North Maluku, he added.

A number of districts and cities in North Maluku will conduct local festivals prior to the implementation of Sail Morotai to demonstrate their support to the maritime event.

Ternate, North Halmahera and West Halmahera Districts were among city and district administrations that would hold the pre-Sail Morotai events , Muhadjir, concurrently the chairman of the local organizing committee of Sail Morotai, said recently.

In cooperation with the Ternate Sultanate, the Ternate administration would organize a Legu Gam Festival in April 2012, he said.

North Halmahera would hold a Hibua Lamo Festival and a national congress for Indonesian Indigenous People, in April 2012, while West Halmahera would organize a Jailolo Bay Festival on May 17-19, 2012, he added.

The activities would promote North Maluku`s tourism objects as well as Sail Morotai, Albar said.

Indonesia organizes an international sail event annually on an outer most isle by hold a ship parade and a civic mission participated in by several countries.

The previous sail events included Sail Bunaken in 2009, Sail Banda (2010), and Sail Wakatobi (2011). Sail Komodo is planned to be organized in 2013.
