SYRIAN ENVOY MEETS WITH MPR CHAIRMAN, HOUSE SPEAKER


       Jakarta, Nov. 16/2005 (ANTARA) - Syrian Ambassador to Indonesia Mohamad Darwish Baladi held meetings consecutively with Chairman of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Hidayat Nurwahid, and House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono to discuss bilateral and regional issues here at the Parliament Building, Tuesday.

        "We talked on bilateral relations, especially the political ties between Syria and Indonesia. We particularly emphasized on how to strengthen the cooperation between the People's Consultative Assemblies and Parliaments of the two countries," Ambassador Baladi told ANTARA following the two meetings.


        The Syrian envoy hoped that the MPR and Parliament of Indonesia and their Syrian counterparts could exchange visits of delegations in the near future.

        The Syrian ambassador in the separate meetings with MPR Chairman Hidayat Nurwahid and House Speaker Agung Leksono touched on the current developments in Syria in particular and in the Middle East in general.

        "I explained to them that Syria fully cooperates with the UN commission of enquiry into the February assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri," Baladi said.

        He said that his country was also concerned of the assassination of Hariri and ready to fully cooperate with the UN investigation commission.

        "Hariri was a close friend of Syria,' he added.

        According to Ambassador Baladi, both Hidayat Nurwahid and Agung Laksono expressed their solidarity with Syria.
