JAKARTA TO TREAT PEARL LOVERS IN OCTOBER FESTIVAL by Fardah

Jakarta, July 23, 2011 (ANTARA) - Pearl lovers should not miss an Indonesian Pearl Festival 2011 to be organized by the marine affairs and fisheries ministry in cooperation with the Indonesian Pearl Cultivation Association (ASBUMI) in Jakarta next October.
The festival to be held from October 12 to 16, 2011, will offer among other things the precious and finest south sea pearl (SSP) which is also known as the Queen of Pearls.

The festival also to be supported by the association of wives of the ministry`s employees Dharma Wanita, was aimed at promoting businesses and commodity branding of Indonesian pearls, the marine affairs and fisheries ministry said in a press statement here on Friday (July 22).
SSP Indonesia resulted from Pinctada maxima shell is often seen as unique pearls for their colors and stunning glittery which are on high demands internationally.
At least four countries are known as main South Sea Pearl producers, namely Indonesia, Australia, the Philippines, and Myanmar.
Indonesia`s South Sea pearls naturally occur in several colors ranging from white and cream, to silver, pink, and gold.
The country`s cultured Southsea pearls are produced in the waters surrounding Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, and in West Papua Province (Irian Jaya), within the Raja Ampat (Four Kings) archipelago, at Alyui Bay`s Waigeo island.
According to the ministry`s data, Indonesia`s pearls dominate 53 percent of the world`s pearl production reaching up to 12 tons of pearls annually, and five tons of them are for exports.

"Indonesia has good pearl industry prospects because 53 percent of the world`s finest types of pearl is found in our waters," Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad said after witnessing a pearl harvest at Senggigi in Lombok Barat district, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province, last year.

Around 95 percent or 5.5 tons of the total national pearl production of 5.7 tons in 2010, were exported to Hong Kong, India, the Philippines, and Tahiti.

The government was not satisfied because the country`s pearl exports valued at US$30 million in 2010, or far from the world`s total export value estimated at around US$1.5 billion annually.

To optimally benefit the pearl price hike in international markets from five US dollars per gram in 2010 to 16 US dollars per gram in 2011, Indonesia has set a target of national pearl production from 5.7 tons in 2010 to seven tons in 2011.

The government is also boosting pearls production in major pearl producing regions such as North Maluku, West Papua, North Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

Lombok, a major south sea pearl producer, held a Sumbawa Pearl Festival 2011 in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on July 8-11, 2011.

The festival was aimed at promoting Lombok as an international class pearl producer, the tourism and culture ministry in a press statement in Jakarta recently.

"The pearl festival is also expected to encourage foreign tourists to visit Indonesia and NTB in particular," DR. Sapta Nirwandar, the ministry`s director general of marketing, said.

The event was also expected to promote the NTB pearls to get access to international markets and encourage investment in the pearl and tourism businesses in NTB.

NTB is known as the largest pearl producer and has exported pearls among other things to New York (the United States), Tokyo (Japan), Geneva and Zurich (Switzerland), and Milan (Italy).

Some potential buyers from 36 countries were invited in the festival which also organized auctions of pearls from NTB, Maluku, Ternate (North Maluku), and Papua.

The SSP auctions resulted in sales transactions worth a total of US$ 96,000. The pearl festival recorded the total value of transactions at Rp150 million.

The price of Lombok pearl rose from US$5 last year to US$16.3 per gram this year, according to Bambang Setiawan, deputy chairman of the Indonesian Pearl Cultivation Association`s Organization Unit.

Apart from boosting the people`s economy especially in the tourism and trade sector, the festival opened wider pearl market and investment opportunities , according to Sapta Nirwandar.

The festival was also aimed at strengthening the position of Lombok and Sumbawa as the world finest pearl producers which are able to compete in the world markets.

Tourists and pearls seem to be inseparable. The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) administration hoped the pearl festival could make Visit Lombok Sumbawa 2012 a success.

The Visit Lombok Sumbawa 2012 will be launched starting January 1, 2012.

Domestically, some 27 middle and big scale companies are engaged in pearl business and employ around 3000 people.

There are also at least 100 pearl merchants, employing 100 people pearl jewelry workers, 300 pearl craftsmen, and involving 5000 small-scale pearl oyster producers.

To protect the local pearl business, Minister Fadel Muhammad has banned Chinese pearl import amounting to three tons with an excuse that the quality is below the Indonesian National Standard (SNI).

The Ministry also plans to set up a Pearl Broodstock Centre in Karang Asem, Bali Province, which is also known as a pearl producer and exporter. ***5***
