Jakarta, Dec. 31 (ANTARA) - The South Jakarta District Court here on Wednesday acquitted Muchdi Pr, a former senior BIN (National Intelligence Agency) official, from the charge of murdering Munir, a noted human rights activist.
"Hereby, we declare  Muchdi Pr as legally and convincingly not proven guilty of the charges," presiding Judge Soeharto said here on Wednesday.
The prosecution had previously charged Muchdi Pr based on  Article 55, point 1, the second of the Criminal Code (KUHP) in lieu of Article 340 KUP, and Article  55, point 1, the first of KUHP in lieu of Article 340 of KUHP.
"The defendant must be acquitted from all of the primary  charges," the judge said.
Munir Said Thalib died of arsenic poisoning aboard a Garuda Indonesia flight to Amsterdam in 2004.
On December 2, government prosecutors formally sought a 15-year jail sentence for Muchdi, 59, a former deputy head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN).

RUPIAH STRENGTHENS FURTHER MONDAY AFTERNOON

Jakarta, Nov. 3 (ANTARA) - The rupiah strengthened further on Monday afternoon in the Jakarta inter-bank spot market, following an announcement by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) on the October inflation rate which had dropped to 0.45 percent from 0.97 percent in the preceding  month.
The rupiah traded at Rp10,750/10,850 per US dollar, up 225 points from Rp Rp10,975/10,995 per US dollar when it closed at the last weekend.
"The improvement in the October inflation rate helps the rupiah to strengthen, because market players release US dollars for profit-taking," Retail Banking Director of PT Bank Mega Tbk Kostaman Thayib said here on Monday.
He estimated that the positive sentiment created by  the favorable report on the October inflation rate would sustain the rupiah's upward movement.
However, it would be hard for the Indonesian currency to reach the level of below Rp10,000 per US dollar because the global financial crisis was still going on, he said.
Meanwhile,  Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Boediono said  the  recent weakening of the rupiah would not worsen the inflation rate in October.
"The impact (of the rupiah's weakening)  has been offset  by the drop in commodity prices, so I think it is not going to affect the inflation rate too much," he said.

Devisa: foreign exchange (forex) reserves
The amount of Indonesia's foreign exchange reserves reached around US$51 billion at the end of October 2008, down nearly  US$7 billion from US$57.108 billion in September, a Bank Indonesia (BI or central bank) official said.
"The reserves have dropped to about US$51 billion," Hartadi A Sarwono, BI deputy governor,  said here on Wednesday, adding that since July, 2008, they had decreased by around US$10 billion.
At the end of July 2008, the foreign exchange reserves stood at  US$60.563 billion, the highest level reached since early 2008. In August, the foreign exchange reserves decreased to US$58.358 billion, and in September to US$57.108, down  US$1.15 billion.
The country's foreign exchange reserves had dropped because they were among other things used to intervene in the money market in order to shore up the rupiah, he said.

INDONESIAN QUAKE KILLS ONE, DESTROYS HUNDREDS OF HOMES

Jakarta (dpa) - The powerful undersea earthquake that struck
Indonesia
's North Sulawesi province and nearby regions early Monday
killed at least one person, injured three others and collapsed
hundreds of buildings, officials said.

The quake at 01:02 am (1702 GMT Sunday) measured 7.7 on the
Richter scale. Its epicentre was located about 138 kilometres north-
west of Gorontalo on North Sulwesi, about 1,950 kilometers east-
northeast of Jakarta. It occurred about 10 kilometres beneath the
seabed.

The US Geological Survey recorded the quake at 7.5 on the Richter
scale.

Indonesia's National Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG)
briefly issued a tsunami warning, but the alert was canceled about an
hour later, after no tidal waves materialized, an official said.

A series of aftershocks followed the powerful quake, with the
highest measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, sparking a further panic
among residents and preventing them from returning to their homes.

Thousands of residents in Gorontalo, Palu and other regions
remained outdoors six hours after the quake. They were staying in the
hills for fear of tidal waves despite the lifting of the official
tsunami warning.
At least one person was killed in the quake and a number of school
buildings collapsed in northern Gorontalo, Rustam Pakaya of the
crisis centre at the Health Ministry said.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, sits on the Pacific
"Ring of Fire," the edge of a tectonic plate prone to seismic
upheaval.

The country launched a new high-tech system early last week aimed
at detecting potential tsunamis and providing faster alerts in a
region battered by frequent earthquakes.

A major earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck in December 2004,
leaving more than 170,000 people dead or missing in Indonesia's Aceh
province and around 500,000 homeless.

Merck to shut down plant in S. Korea
SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Yonhap) -- U.S. pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. will shut down
its plant in South Korea next year as part of its cost-cutting efforts, the
company's local unit said Monday.
Merck also plans to lay off some 20 of a total of 40 South Korean workers at the
plant in the city of Ansan, 42 kilometers south of Seoul, said an official at MSD
Korea Ltd.
Closing the facility in South Korea is part of Merck's worldwide efforts to
reduce costs, the official said.
Last month, the New Jersey-based Merck said it would cut 6,800 employees
worldwide after its third-quarter net profit plunged 28 percent from a year
earlier.

Responding to the verdict, the senior artist's lawyers, Chris Salam and Sunarno Edy Wibowo, requested a week's time to consider  whether they would accept or appeal it.
Earlier, the Surabaya Court had passed  verdicts on four other people involved in the same  illicit drug 'party' in Surabaya.

South Korea posts trade surplus of US$1.22 bln in Oct.

SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korea posted a trade surplus of US$1.22 billion in October on a surge in exports of ships and oil products as well as lower crude prices, a government report showed Monday.

Exports rose 10 percent on-year to $37.89 billion last month, while imports
gained 12 percent to $36.67 billion, according to the provisional report by the
Ministry of Knowledge Economy. It was the nation's first trade surplus since May.
"The surplus is expected to help stabilize the foreign exchange market and have
beneficial effect on the overall economy," said Knowledge Economy Minister Lee
Youn-ho.
The senior policymaker added that the positive shift in the trade balance should
reduce the annual deficit, which stood at $13.45 billion as of last month, to
around $9 billion by year's end. The government earlier predicted a deficit of $6
billion this year.

car-bus collision kills 1, injures 20
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A car going the wrong way on a divided highway collided head-on with a Greyhound bus early Saturday, killing the driver of the car and injuring 20 others, police said. Panicked passengers crawled out the bus' windows after the crash.
The bus driver had tried to evade the oncoming car, police and a passenger said. Heather Marie Thomas, 23, was driving southbound in a northbound lane of Interstate 85, police Lt. Mark Drinkard said. Police said they did not know why the car was in the wrong lane or whether alcohol was involved.
After the crash, panic erupted in the bus because the door was jammed shut and the car was smoking, raising a threat of fire, passenger Clint Cannon said.
"People were screaming. They were handing babies out the windows," Cannon said. "It was a frenzy. There were people screaming 'Calm down!' There were people trying to push each other out of the windows, They thought the bus was going to explode."Drinkard said 20 people were taken to two hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

PROSECUTION DEMANDS EIGHT YEARS FOR FORMER BI CHIEF

Jakarta, Oct. 8 (ANTARA) - The prosecution in the  court trials of former Bank Indonesia (BI or central bank) governor Burhanuddin Abdullah in  the illegal  BI funds transfer case  have demanded  a jail sentence of eight years for him.
Presenting its demand at a court session here Wednesday, the prosecution also demanded that Abudllah be ordered to pay a fine of  Rp500 million or remain in prison for six more months.
The former BI chief was considered guilty of corruption as defined in at least two anti-corruption  laws.
In the case, Rp100 billion in BI funds were illegally  spent to help a number of former top BI executives escape prosecution for their role in the Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance (BLBI) scandal and to maintain a lobby on House of Representatives (DPR) deliberations on amendments to the BI law in 2003.
Abudllah had all along protested his innocence by arguing the proposals  to disburse the funds were approved  at a meeting of the BI board of governors. He had only implemented a decision made collectively by the central bank's management.

Tangerang, Banten, Aug 9 (ANTARA)- The prosecution in the Tangerang District Court trial of former tax official Gayus Tambunan on the charge of using a forged passport here Tuesday demanded a three- year jail term for the defendant.

New Delhi, Dec 9 (PTI) Parliament resumes a brief sitting from Wednesday in which the government is expected to seek a political consensus on initiatives to fight terrorism against the backdrop of recent Mumbai attacks.

The 10-day sitting, the third part of the session
which began on July 21 for securing the trust vote, is being
held at a time when the assembly election results have come as
a booster for the Congress that leads the United Progressive
Alliance (UPA) government.

With the Congress buoyed over the assembly poll
outcome, the ruling combine could attempt to embarrass the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its terror plank, which
failed to have much impact in the assembly polls.

The government could come out with measures to put in
place the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) as also a legal
framework to counter terrorism.

The highlight of the 10-day sitting could be the
execution of the FIA proposal that may require the opposition
backing in view of its implications on a subject of law and
order, which is a state subject under the Constitution.

Won slides against dollar amid dollar shortage woes
SEOUL, March 2 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean currency declined against the U.S.
dollar Monday, flirting with the 1,560-won mark, as concerns over the health of
the U.S. banking sector sparked dollar shortage woes, dealers said.
The local currency was trading at 1,560.50 won to the greenback as of 9:28 a.m.,
down 26.5 won from the previous session's close. The currency dipped as low as
1,562 won at one point. The won has lost around 19 percent against the dollar so
far this year.
The U.S. government said Friday it will boost its stake in troubled Citigroup
Inc. to up to 36 percent by converting its preferred stocks to common shares,
which analysts say may be a model for ailing other financial banks.
The country's key stock index tumbled 3.03 percent hit by losses in U.S. markets
and the won's weakness. The Dow Jones industrial average reached the lowest close
in 12 years on Friday due to deepening financial woes.
Foreign investors continued their selling spree of local stocks for the 15th
straight session, dumping a net 28.9 billion won (US$18.6 million) worth of local
stocks on the main bourse.

Seoul stocks sink on banking, tech losses
SEOUL, March 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks dropped 3.19 percent late Monday
morning as steep losses in the local currency dented market sentiment, analysts
said. Banking and tech shares led the market drop.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) plunged 33.95 points to
1,029.08 as of 11:20 a.m.
"Investors seemed to be panicked by the won's quick decline, stemming from
Eastern European default concerns, with the government sending no clear message
on its foreign exchange stance," said Song Kyung-keun, an analyst at Dongbu
Securities.
Foreign investors' net-selling led the fall on the key index, sending large-cap
electronics shares and shipbuilders spiraling downward.
The won was trading at 1,561.3 won to the U.S. dollar as of 11:20 a.m., down 27.3
won from an 11-year low registered at Friday's close.
