JAILOLO BAY'S EXOTIC MARINE SCENERY AWAIT DIVING LOVERS by Johnny Tarigan and Fardah

Jakarta, March 31, 2012 (ANTARA) - Colorful and enchanting coral reefs in various sizes are decorating the undersea scenery of Jailolo Bay marine park, which is also home to many endemic marine biota.
Located in West Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Jailolo Bay has crystal clear waters with a visibility of up to 30 meters deep, and offers miles of spectacular coral reefs which are often called "the rain forests of the ocean" because it holds various marine flora and fauna species.
Diving lovers are invited to enjoy the exotic marine scenery in the marine park particularly during the Fourth Jailolo Festival to be organized from June 18 to 19, 2012.
Around 50 percent of the targeted 400 divers expected to join the Festival, have confirmed their participation in the upcoming event, Head of the West Halmahera District Tourism Service Feny Kita said in the West Halmahera district`s capital of Jailolo, recently.
Martin Krisna, a professional diver in Halmahera, expressed his optimism that the target to attract at least 400 divers could be achieved.
Many new diving spots have been discovered around Jailolo Bay and Loloda Bay waters that could attract diving lovers, he said.
Thousands of coral reef species, clear blue water and many endangered fish species such as Mandarin fish and Fan fish have so far been able to attract divers from countries such as Canada, Norway, Singapore, the Netherlands, and the United States, to explore the undersea panorama of Jailolo Bay.
In the second Jailolo Bay Festival in 2010, a number of foreign divers and 150 national divers from Jakarta, Lampung (southern Sumatra), and Bandung (West Java) participated in the event.

Having a population of around 10 million people, the district organized Cabaret On The Sea to demonstrate its beautiful marine park during the festival two years ago by featuring Nadine Candrawinata, a national diving icon.

West Halmahera District Head Namto H. Roba, who is fond of diving, quoted a German researcher and diver who compared a diving site in Babua isle waters in Jailolo Bay, with Raja Ampat Isle, Bali and Bunaken waters.

The undersea scenery in NHR 1 to NHR 10 diving sites in Jailolo Bay and the 1-12 diving spots in Loloda area is still well preserved thanks to the environmental preservation efforts by the local authorities, Namto said.

Fishing using bombs, poison and electricity is prohibited in West Halmahera waters, he stated.

The region is abundant of tuna fish and has a tuna processing factory to produce processed food such as sashimi tuna to buyers.

The Jailolo Festival 2012 will feature cultural activities of local tribes such as Sao Tugu, Tilingi, Dubuu, Rou-Rou, Togoa, Sahu, Ternate, Loloda, Gorep and Wayoli.

Local culinary and spices particularly clove and nutmeg will also be presented during the festival.

The local authorities organized a pre-Jailolo festival event last week to promote the Jailolo Festival by presenting traditional dance performances such as Sala Dabi-Dabi, Legu Salai, Paddy planting, Yanger music, Tataruba and Bamboo drums and fluids.

The upcoming Jailolo Festival is organized also to

highlight the international marine event Sail Indonesia Morotai which will take place in Morotai Island District, North Maluku, in September 2012.

"We will organize a festival at Jailolo to support the

implementation of Sail Indonesia Morotai next September," Syarif

Ali, a spokesman of the West Halmahera district administration, said

in Ternate, the capital of North Maluku, recently.

Sail Morotai is expected to be participated in by around 154 yachts representing Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Britain, and the United States, among other countries.

They will start from Darwin, Australia, in June or July and will make several stops at a number of Indonesia`s isles in more than 20 districts before arriving on Morotai Island.

Last year, the Third Jailolo Bay Festival was organized on May 14-18. Jailolo or Gilolo is a name given by the inhabitants to the island known as Halmahera in North Maluku Province.

Colorful cultural events were staged in an aesthetic package of shows. Last year`s theme was "Journey Through the Heart of West Halmahera". Visitors were entertained with dance and music performances such as the Cakalele, Soya-soya, Legu Sarai, the musical of Yanger, Tataruba, Sara Dabi-dabi, and Horum Sasadu. Grand culinary event was also organized where all were invited to join the feast for free. ***3***
